The Fifth Weekly Digest of Illegal Immigration in America

During the week of September 1-7, 2007:

Malos Muchachos

We begin the week with a bonafide doosey.  Miguel Angel Ortiz, an illegal alien from Uruguay, fled poverty in his homeland back in 1987 and over the last 15 years especially became a multi-millionaire living the high life in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Using a stolen identity, Ortiz established himself well as a master welder, formed a corporation and landed huge jobs as a contractor at the shipyards, sometime reaping as much as $1.5 Million for his work.  Even though he amassed a long list of crimes committed here inclusive of car theft, child abuse and a short ton of violent crimes — including kicking his pregnant wife in the stomach — and the next year kicking his 5-month old daughter, Ortiz skated by.  In 2002, he was convicted on his latest domestic abuse case involving his wife, served six months in jail and deported in 2003.  Ortiz again returned illegally, reunited with his family and formed the corporation “Virginia Welding and Fabrication, Inc.” using his wife’s name as incorporator and President and started raking in the dineros.  Virginia terminated the company’s corporate status in 2006 for failure to file required annual reports.  So Ortiz started another company, “Ortiz & Guys Welding and Ship Repair” and kept right on going…still using that same stolen identity he had purchased for $8,000 in New York back in 1996.  By the way, our federal government granted Ortiz a passport under the name of that stolen identity.  Ortiz’s jet-setting lifestyle of travels, two 2006 Hummers, a Harley, a 2007 Mercedes, two other fairly new vehicles and their lavish beachfront home finally came to an end when he tried to renew his passport this April and was pegged by ICE.  His oft-abused wife also called in another domestic violence claim and outed him as an illegal alien.  Ortiz pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and falsifying a passport application and was sentenced August 20 to 27 months in prison, then will face deportation.  In his sentencing hearing, a federal prosecutor detailed Ortiz’s litany of deceit and asked for the maximum punishment under federal guidelines.  “He is someone who is intelligent, he’s hardworking, he’s resourceful and he’s determined,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Krask told the judge. “Those normally are good adjectives to say about someone. “But I think in adjudging Mr. Ortiz’s potential to commit this crime again,’’ he continued, Ortiz “presents a strong likelihood that he’s going to try and come into the United States after he’s done with this court.”  Groups seeking better enforcement of immigration laws said that the Ortiz case is indicative of the need for an improved identification system – one that relies on fingerprints or DNA. You absolutely MUST read the details revealed in the Virginia-Pilot’s investigation and coverage of this bizarre case and ask yourself, too, just how this guy slipped through so many crevasses, not cracks.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Minneapolis, Minnesota has ordered the resentencing of the former owner of the Udupi Cafe in Columbia Heights for employing illegal Mexican workers, saying the judge failed to adequately explain why he imposed a lighter sentence than was recommended by federal guidelines.  Nagappan Mylappan Chettiar, 45, pleaded guilty last year to knowingly hiring 10 or more illegal aliens. U.S. District Judge Michael J. Davis sentenced him to one day of imprisonment (time served), plus two years of supervised release with three months of that to be served in a half-way house and nine months in home detention. The U.S. attorney’s office appealed, calling the sentence a “dramatic” and “extraordinary” departure from advisory sentencing guidelines, which are presumed to be reasonable. Prosecutors argued that no “exceptional facts” warranted such leniency, and argued for a sentence of one year and a day in prison.

A Mexican coyote and nine illegal aliens from Mexico were nabbed in Kingsport, Tennessee during a traffic stop for speeding.  Police way the group began their journey in Mexico, traveling through Atlanta and were on their way to Charlottesville, Virginia.  The coyote was dropping illegals off at specific locations across the United States.

Jesus Avila, 22, who is accused of murdering a Burlington City, New Jersey man and shooting his girlfriend in the ankle over the weekend, has been identified as an illegal alien from Mexico and a local gang member.  At the time of the murder and aggravated assault, Avila was free under a $5,000 bond having been arrested and arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of “creating a false public alarm,” whatever that is.

Illegal alien Jesus Manuel Holguin-Albo confessed to stabbing his friend to death in Provo, Utah last year.  In a pre-trial motion for his coming murder trial, his attorney has claimed the jury pool available to his client does not contain enough Latinos and is requesting more Latinos be seated and the jury system changed so that there can be.  By law, juries are created by legal records from drivers licenses, tax payers and registered voters, none of which reflect race or ethnicity.  And while census records place Utah County at somewhere between 3.5% and 8.5% Latino, a lot more Latinos are visible in the community.  In a 42-page ruling, Judge Lynn Davis outlined several problems with Holguin-Albo’s motion, including the possibility that 70 percent of the Hispanic population [in Utah County] could be illegal.  I would personally add that, as of now, illegal aliens are first and foremost illegal, cannot possess a valid drivers license, are not recorded as legal do not pay taxes and are not allowed to vote…therefore illegal aliens are not eligible to serve as jurors

A total of 40 Hispanics — a large, but “untold” number of whom are illegal aliens — were nabbed in a cocaine distribution investigation in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.  Authorities say the group, which included a number of gang members, have been responsible for distributing more than $31 Million in cocaine during the past three years.  The drug ring was hauling in some $200,000 per week from their cocaine sales in Hazleton alone.

Miguel Barajas Huerta, 43, was stopped by State Troopers in Springfield Township, Pennsylvania for drunk driving…and for transporting 14 illegal aliens from Mexico in the back open bed of his F-250 pickup

ICE officials have shut-down a modern day slavery ring in Newark, New Jersey, in which some 20 illegal alien women from the African nation of Togo were forced to work 14-hour days without pay and threatened to be sent back home if they refused.  Three Togolese nationals have been charged.  Lassissi Afolabi, 44, Akouavi Kpade Afolabi, 39, and Dereck Hounakey, 30, all face charges of harboring illegal aliens, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Kpade Afolabi is also charged with smuggling illegal aliens for financial gains, which can be punished by an additional 10 years in prison.

Border Patrol agents found 17 illegal aliens crammed into a van near Mobile, Alabama.  The van, known as “Camionetas” in Spanish, is from one of 45 known companies operating out of Houston, Texas that sends illegal alien van-loads regularly throughout the country, and which ICE is targeting for their smuggling activities.

Remember that bogus American Indian tribe in Wichita, Kansas that was scamming illegal aliens by selling “citizenships” to their tribe for $5,000 a pop with the promise of becoming an automatic US citizen?  ICE raided the two offices of the Kaweah Indian Nation in Wichita. Our Texas Attorney General is also suing the fake tribe and its leader, Malcolm L. Webber, for fraudulently selling tribe memberships by claiming that tribal members could get a Social Security number, protection from deportation and U.S. citizenship once the tribe is federally recognized.  (Ahem)  They’re not a recognized tribe, nor is Webber an American Indian.

Two illegal aliens from Mexico are in the custody of Fort Worth, Texas police for the attempted kidnapping of a female TCU student.  The two illegals are strongly suspected in three other attempted kidnappings that have plagued the TCU area for some time.  Jose Alberto Chavollo, 19, and Victor Garcia, 23, were arrested by Mansfield authorities. Chavollo faces charges of aggravated kidnapping, evading arrest and possession of a controlled substance and was being held with bail set at $31,000. Garcia faces a charge of aggravated kidnapping and was being held with bail set at $100,000.

Some 65 people — mostly illegal aliens — were nabbed in a week-long anti-gang operation targeting Hispanic gangs in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.    A total of 5,000 Hispanic gang members have been arrested since the program began in February of 2005.  Per Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel:  “Some of those arrested were among Oklahoma County’s most dangerous gang members.”  Those arrested hailed from Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and IRAQ.

Peligro, Will Robinson!!

Mexico does not end at its borders….  Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico.”  So said Mexico President Felipe Calderon in his state of the nation address at the National Palace before a riotously enthusiastic audience in Mexico and here in the states.  Calderon, like his predecessors Fox in 2004 and Zedillo in 1995, is sending a clearly seditious message (first strongly outlined by Fox in 2002 of Mexico’s long-range goals of EU-type open borders to establish “our new nation”) to the near 50 Million Hispanics in America:  Live in the US (where we restored your Mexican citizenship by a constitutional change in Mexican law in 1998), but put Mexico first, even if you’ve taken an oath as a US citizen to renounce your Mexico allegiance, or allegiance to any other country.  Calderon reinforced Mexico’s rulers in telling all within ear shot the first loyalty of all men and women of Mexican ancestry, no matter where they live, is to Mexico.  In consideration of the Democrat’s unprecedented pandering (strategically smart) to an Hispanic debate crowd, there is no way to fully underscore just how easily the liberal establishment can allow and even persuade Mexican-Americans to vote Mexico’s own interests here in the US.

Hasta la Vista

Nineteen illegal aliens have been apprehended in Grand Island, Nebraska during a raid of Cloudburst Lawn & Sprinkler, a local landscaping firm.  Heading back to their homelands in the next few months will be 11 illegal aliens from Mexico, 6 from El Salvador and 2 from Guatemala.

There were four illegal aliens inside a van carrying more than 14 people that overturned on a Chicago area freeway killing two of the occupants.   The van load — all hired by Barton Staffing Services of Joliet, Illinois — was returning from picking up trash at the Cog Hill Golf Course in Lemont that will host the PGA’s BMW Championship this weekend.  The four now face deportation proceedings.

Already more than a hundred illegal aliens have been nabbed this past week in the Mobile, Alabama area at various construction sites, and five were caught near a middle school in Summerdale after “commenting” on the “appearance” of girls there.  No information is available, other than all being Hispanic.

More than 24,000 illegal aliens from Guatemala are expected to be deported by year’s end.  So far in 2007 more than 15,000 illegal aliens here have been shipped back home, much larger numbers than just a year ago in which more than 18,000 were deported back to Guatemala.

Loco Politicos

The U.S. House of Representatives is currently underway in a last-ditch effort to secure some sense of immigration reform in the revival of a bill that died in committee so that the notorious “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” monster package of confusion and amnesty could be brought before the Senate and ultimately die.  The current bill calls for some of the same things as the compromise legislation that died. Both include a pathway to citizenship for those already here illegally.  Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said the bill essentially sells citizenship for $2,500 — the amount of the proposed fines. He derided the touch-back provision as “a scenic bus ride.”

Arizona Senator Jon Kyl, who has watched his popularity take a nose dive after his high-profile role in the Senate’s failed immigration reform legislation that would have granted amnesty to the near 20 million illegal aliens in the US, has landed in the news again, albeit through a column he wrote in an Arizona newspaper speaking out against Sanctuary Cities.  He is right, in my opinion, about the plight this country is suffering when he asserts ” Sanctuary policies compound the failure of the federal government to counter the flow of criminal aliens into the United States.”  And this year’s Government Accounting Office statistics that 55,322 criminal aliens were arrested at least a total of 459,614 times, averaging over eight arrests per alien and the Department of Justice having expressed its surprise at the “extremely high” rate of rearrests for criminal aliens when it found that that 73 criminal aliens in a study group were arrested a total of 429 times, certainly underscores our disaster.  Kyl rightly slams DHS Chief Michael Chertoff for “policy choices” that have destined local efforts to fail.  And, of course, Kyl touts his own failed legislation.  Indeed, I want all the tough enforcement policies that Kyl’s plan would bring to help identify incarcerated illegal aliens, detain criminal aliens, and even create a national database of those overstaying their visas.  But where the good Senator departs from me and the majority of US citizens is in granting a free-ride amnesty in the process.  And, of course, his column carefully stays completely away from that little issue.

An October 1 court date has been set by San Francisco’s US District Judge Maxine Chesney to hear arguments on whether the Social Security Administration can begin sending employers those no-match letters regarding their employees.  The letters were slated to begin mailing out on September 14 before Judge Chesney granted a temporary restraining order to the AFL-CIO and several immigrant rights groups.  Having given the matter some thought, I find this restraining order good news actually.  How in the world can the no-match letters be guaranteed as accurate, when the database from which they would be generated is so flawed?  Chock another one up to a politically-obsessed and inept federal government, that allowed the SSA to degenerate into its present quagmire. Meanwhile, the SSA is warning that Judge Chesney’s blockade will effectively delay the processing of millions of disability and retirement claims and payments because of processing logjams created by delays in sending out those no-match letters.

In Sacramento County, California, the Sheriff wants to hire 21 more deputies to help with county crime.  The District Attorney would like to increase his staff at the county’s crime lab that is overwhelmed.  As the county begins to battle out a new budget, Sacramento County Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan has said she can save millions if the county stops providing free healthcare to illegal aliens.  In this fiscal year alone, the county will provide routine and acute care to somewhere between 2,400 and 4,000 illegal aliens at a cost of between $1.4 Million and $2.3 Million.  It’s a thought that will probably die pretty quickly, since yanking funding for healthcare to illegals there would further overwhelm emergency rooms and lead to more serious, more expensive illnesses in the illegal alien community.

In a report sanctioned by San Diego County in California, taxpayers footed an estimated bill of $256 Million during 2006 for their illegal alien population.  The figure includes $155 in free medical care and $75 Million to pay for incarcerations and court costs in the county that borders Mexico.

Muy Estúpido

A boat load of illegal aliens ran aground on a rocky reef near La Jolla, California.  When the boat hit, at least ten illegal aliens scattered to the four winds and may have escaped.  The abandoned boat finally reached the beach, where authorities recovered lifejackets, fuel tanks filled with gasoline and water bottles with Hispanic logos.  The unregistered 20-foot vessel is “a likely smuggling boat,” authorities said.

Centro Legal, an Hispanic immigration rights advocacy group, has filed suit in Minneapolis, Minnesota on behalf of ten illegal aliens nabbed in that large raid of the Swift & Co. meatpacking plant in Worthington that netted 200 illegals.  The suit claims federal agents “insulted, abused, and humiliated the plaintiffs on account of their race” and ordered female Hispanic workers to disrobe in front of federal agents. White workers, meanwhile, were allowed to move about the plant freely during the raid and weren’t subject to unlawful conduct on the part of agents, according to the lawsuit.  The Feds say the claims are false.

Muy Buenos!

North Carolina will begin deporting their prison inmates across the state when their crimes are adjudicated.  Since July, when the measure went into effect, 125 illegal alien criminals have been slated for eventual deportation.

Mr. Michael Chertoff has declared before a House panel that he will “not tolerate interference” by “sanctuary cities” in the US over his application (at last) of federal immigration laws, specifically those requiring proof of citizenship before hiring an employee.”  Regarding recent blocks in California of checking residency against Social Security numbers, Chertoff said [the Dept. of Homeland Security] is exploring all of its legal options.  “I intend to take as vigorous legal action as the law allows to prevent that from happening, prevent that kind of interference.”  Of course, Chertoff has certainly not threatened to halt federal funding to those sanctuary cities….  Typical.

Hmmm…

City officials in Herndon, Virginia have decided to close a day laborer site, due to the site’s and city’s inability to verify legal citizenship of those arriving there daily to seek employment off the streets.  In 2005, Herndon banned day laborers and motorists seeking to employ them from meeting on the streets, a matter that had created huge chaos in the city.  By banning the solicitations, which the courts view as a First Amendment right of free speech of the workers and those wanting to hire them, Herndon created the day laborer site to provide an alternative means, a court requirement. Ultimately, Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Leslie Alden held the site fell short of providing alternative means of seeking employment to illegal aliens, who she feels are also entitled to constitutional rights of free speech.  So the city found itself in a catch-22.  Having logged several ordinances cracking down on illegal aliens, they found themselves incapable of preventing illegal aliens from being hired through the site that they would now have to manage.  Instead, they opted to close the center and hope to utilize zoning and traffic ordinances to prevent day laborer gathering sites from popping up in the city henceforward.  It’s a mess.

POSTLUDE: This is a recurring weekly compendium of acts and issues inherent to the matters surrounding illegal immigration in the United States.  Quite simply, the following are items of interest to me and which I feel merit further perusal by American citizens.  For the record, clearly know and understand that I am NOT anti-Hispanic or anti-immigration, but am sick, tired and damned well highly frustrated at our elected officials in Washington who are selling our nation’s future for personal gain and a hopeful new future voter base.  Despite laws enacted and funding remitted, practically NOTHING has been done to seal our wide open borders to the South AND to the North, nor has anything yet been done to end the menace and financial drain of continuing illegal immigration into our sovereign nation.

This Summer, unprecedented numbers of American citizens made their voices clearly heard in opposition of the proposed 2007 Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act and, as the result, the bill died a horrible death.  Americans do not want amnesty handed to some near 20 million illegal alien criminals, who broke the law being here in the first place.  We demanded the government fulfill its promises and laws and BUILD THAT FENCE, which they have not.  We demanded the government fulfill its promises and laws and end illegal immigration and punish those who would hinder those measures, which it has only just now decided selectively to do.  Will employers be forced to end illegal hiring practices of undocumented workers?  Will the overwhelming disaster to our nation’s crops, restaurants, hotels and lawn services come to pass?  Will Americans face huge escalation in prices as a result of pulling a false economy into the light of legality?  Will Americans tire of the struggle and forget why we were enraged by amnesty and free rides to illegal aliens in the first place?

This weekly entry is my attempt to see that the latter won’t happen.

Obey our laws and we will embrace you.  Defy our laws and you can go to Hell.

PREFACE: This is a recurring weekly compendium of acts and issues inherent to the matters surrounding illegal immigration in the United States.

During the week of August 25-31, 2007:

Malos Muchachos

Leon Lugo Andrade, 37 and illegal alien from Mexico, will spend the rest of his life in prison for his unbelievably gruesome murder of 61-year-old William Huang, a restaurateur and ordained minister in Houston.  It took the jury a mere ten minutes to bring their verdict against Andrade, who hacked Huang mercilessly to death with a machete in front of Andrade’s estranged wife and daughter outside Huang’s restaurant, on the very night Huang was celebrating his youngest son’s 10th birthday.  The estranged wife, a waitress at Huang’s Lucky Seafood restaurant, had reported to Huang and authorities that Andrade was stalking her since their separation and held a restraining order against Andrade for over a year for repeatedly beating her and their children. During the time Andrade lived illegally in Houston, he was convicted of murder/manslaughter, numerous DWIs, firing weapons and carrying a shotgun in public.  Huang, at the time of his murder, was trying to help Andrade’s estranged wife and daughter escape to safety.

A 25-year-old off-duty motorcycle cop from Flint, Michigan was killed when he was rear-ended by Ramon Felix Pineda, 28 an illegal alien from Mexico.  Officer Vincent Owen D’Anna was riding down the road when a drunken Pineda hit him from behind.  D’Anna was penned beneath Pineda’s Camaro and dragged for some distance before Pineda stopped the car and tried to flee the area on foot.  Local good Samaritans, who witnessed the accident, tackled Pineda and prevented him from fleeing the scene until authorities arrived.  Those good Samaritans lifted the Camaro off of D’Anna who died from his injuries a few hours later in the hospital.

A 25-year-old illegal alien from Guatemala was sentenced this week following his conviction in July for the savage rape and beating of a 73-year-old East Hartford, Connecticut woman.  Alejandro Cuy Xum received 20 years for the attack on the woman, who is confined to a wheelchair and an oxygen tank and has since lost every single thing in life she enjoyed:  her independence in her own love-filled home, her many neighbor friends, her pet dog, and any possible sense of security.

Deported “activist” and Toast of Tijuana, Elvira Arellano has now asked Mexican President Felipe Calderon to appoint her as Mexico’s Ambassador of “Peace and Justice” so that she can return to the United States.  She’s also asked Calderon’s help in obtaining a VISA.

A pickup crammed with 10 illegal aliens being smuggled into the US from Mexico crashed in an extremely remote area in California’s Mojave Dessert killing one alien and injuring nine others.  The pickup, rented in Los Angeles County, was driven by a 19-year-old man and crashed through a guardrail plunging 200 feet down an embankment.  Five riding in the open bed were ejected.  Those who could walk or be dragged fled the scene, but were apprehended by a California Patrol helicopter.  Five Care-Flight helicopters were used to transport the injured to medical care in Las Vegas, Loma Linda and Palm Springs.

Sabien Velasco, a 27-year-old illegal alien from Columbia, now holds the honor of being the very first illegal alien in New Jersey to be reported by police, after his arrest, to immigration officials under the state’s new law less than a week old.  Velasco was arrested in Elmwood Park, New Jersey on aggravated assault and weapons charges after police found him chasing his family through their home wielding a machete.  Velasco is currently unemployed and has been in the U.S. illegally for some five years.

25 of the 29 illegal aliens nabbed at that hog Smithfield processing plant last week in Tar Heels, South Carolina used stolen identities to obtain employment.  Two victims associated with these identity thefts lost more than $10,000 each and another victim was evicted from their subsidized housing because of substantially increased income reported on her social security account.  U.S. Attorney George Holding said the group may have purchased or stolen the identities through a “myriad of ways” – including computer hacking, fraudulent e-mails and Dumpster diving – and didn’t acquire the information from a single location.  “It’s an epidemic problem,” Holding said Tuesday.

An ICE raid at Fairfield, Ohio’s Koch Foods netted over 161 illegal aliens employed at the plant, which is nearly half of the entire workforce.  More arrests are expected as authorities are able to track down those who escaped when the employees scattered.  Twelve were found in a walk-in freezer and required medical care.  40 of those arrested have been granted a “Humanitarian Release” and won’t be immediately deported, as they either have health issues or are the sole caregiver for a child or other family member.  But 20 others (12 men and 8 women) from Mexico, Guatemala and Peru are facing charges of forgery and identity theft and are being detained for trial in Butler CountyAuthorities describe Koch Foods as an “egregious violator” of US immigration laws and has had the company under investigation for two years.  They are watching two other unidentified companies there also that remain under an ongoing investigation.

A Fairfield, Ohio restaurateur, Jing Fei Jiang, an illegal alien from China, has been convicted and sentenced to a year in prison for transporting, harboring and employing illegal aliens in his restaurant.  Jiang has 30 days to cough up $100,000 to the feds, or have his restaurant seized.  Also arrested at the home owned by Jiang in which his illegal employees were sheltered, were “several” additional illegal aliens from China and Mexico, who are in the process of deportation.

Francisco Santos, a 17-year-old illegal alien from Mexico, is quarantined near Atlanta with active (communicable) tuberculosisSantos, a day laborer, finally became so ill that he went to a local hospital for (free) treatment last week and, when diagnosed with TB, refused treatment and tried to leave.   His 8-member immediate family is currently under testing and, if possible, authorities will extend testing to all those Santos has come in contact with in recent weeks.  Santos has also become the poster child of sorts for the unprecedented escalation of TB in Georgia and South Carolina, the latter location seeing over 131 TB cases discovered among workers of one poultry plant caused by illegal aliens who (obviously) are not screened for disease when they sneak over our border.   The CDC reports more than 300 cases discovered in South Carolina each year now nowadays.  FRIDAY UPDATE:  Four people living with Santos have tested positive for TBSantos will likely be fully recovered and these others having completed treatment by the time he is actually deported.

Some 50 members of the notoriously violent MS-13 gang in the Boston area have been the target of ICE raids this week, although it is unknown how many were actually apprehended.  To date, nearly 5,000 violent thugs from some 350 gangs nationwide have been taken into custody since Operation Community Shield began in 2005.  The Boston area raids were implemented by Operation 13 that targets MS-13 members.

Jose Ramirez, 18, and Porfirio Ramirez-Baca, 34, both illegal aliens, are jailed in Woodbridge, Virginia on two counts of assault and battery and two counts of abduction with the intent to defile after attacking a teenage couple.  The pair followed a 17-year-old boy and his 18-year-old girlfriend while walking to their car late at night and stopped the teenage pair from driving away.  One attacked the boy, punching him repeated in the face, while the other grabbed the girl out of the car, threw her down on the ground,  pinned her down and began groping her “inappropriately.”  Both of the teenagers were able to escape and called police.  Following the illegal pair’s adjudication in District (for the adult girl) and Juvenile Court (for the boy), they will face deportation by ICE.An illegal alien (whom police will not identify) , driving a pickup truck reported as stolen in May, was finally arrested near Gila Bend, Arizona after several attempt to flee, resisting arrest and causing several minor injuries to Border Patrol agents.  After his apprehension, he kindly revealed to the agents that he suffered from HIV and Tuberculosis…just before they found about $700,000 worth of marijuana in the back of the truck.  The alien is receiving medical care before continued incarceration, trial and eventual deportation.

Madian Santos, 36 and an illegal alien, was apprehended in Kingman, Arizona while smuggling 5.5 pounds of heroine hidden in the engine manifold.  (Hmmm…  I may be blond, but wouldn’t that be an exceptionally hot place??)  Santos told police he was an illegal alien living in North Carolina and was headed home following a trip to Bakersfield, California.

Nearly 900 pounds of marijuana have been seized along the New Mexico border with Mexico this week in two separate incidents.  In one, a “suspicious” truck hiding out in the dessert was discovered by Border Patrol agents on foot, but the driver was able to flee the scene, ditch his truck, and sneak back into Mexico.  Details of the other incident are unknown.

McAllen, Texas officials are tiring of the prevalent use of one of their city parks as a sleeping and trashing ground for illegal aliens, many of whom arrive there fresh over the border seeking housing and inquiring of “work in New Orleans.”

Mourners in North Bergen, New Jersey are anything but safe in visiting love ones in local cemeteries.  One cemetery alone near the Grove Reformed Church has become home to some 140 illegal alien Latino vagrants and many others are living in other cemeteries in the area.  One 56-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at the cemetery last month and another woman was accosted and her necklace stolen.  Local police claim their hands are tied.  The Mayor says he wasn’t aware there was a problem.  Meanwhile, area residents are furious from police inaction, having the vagrants use their outdoor water faucets to clean up in the morning, and many say they have been approached by drunken males who were panhandling and harassing them.

Those two National Guard soldiers in Laredo, Texas have pled guilty to helping to smuggle a healthy number of illegal aliens across the very border they were there to protect.  Sgt. Julio Pacheco and Sgt. Clarence Hodge, Jr. face about a decade in prison.  The status of the cases against Pacheco’s sister and brother-in-law, who are charged with helping the two soldiers, is unknown.

Hector Valesquez-Nava, 24 and illegal alien from Mexico, changed his plea from not guilty to nolo contendre Wednesday to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter in Los Angeles.  Nava, with a blood alcohol level three times California’s legal limit, crashed into a car last April instantly killing movie director and producer Robert Clark (Porky’s, Porky’s II, A Christmas Story, and Loose Cannons), and Clark’s 24-year-old son, Ariel, a promising jazz musician studying at Santa Monica College.  With Nava’s plea, he cut his potential imprisonment (if convicted on the earlier count) from a max of 12 years to 6.  Nava was already serving two years probation for pleading guilty to a prostitution-related charge in LA in 2005.

Angel Lopez, 33 and illegal alien from El Salvador will be serving 4 to 10 years in a Pennsylvania penitentiary for aggravated assault of his distant relative , Santos Lopez, in Warminster in MarchAngel used his switchblade to slash Santos’s stomach open and delivered several stab wounds to his arms and back.  “It had to do with alcohol,” he explained to the judge via an interpreter.  Prior to the incident, Angel had already been deported once from the US back to El Salvador.  Following his incarceration, the feds will deport him again.

Eddie Carbajal-Lile, an illegal alien from Mexico, has been caught after fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run car crash in Lima, Ohio that killed 17-year-old Paul Watry.   Two other teens were injured in the crash.  Lile will now face a potential 15-year sentence in an Ohio prison…prior to being deported.

Perfecto Rios, 17, illegal alien from Mexico and gang-banger from Concord, North Carolina, has been arrested there on a myriad of severe criminal complaints, including five counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon of two Hispanic businesses, first degree rape and first degree kidnapping of a female clerk during one of those robberies, and more that a dozen other crimes committed in nearby communities.

Miguel Hernandez, 44 and illegal alien from Mexico, was arraigned on two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol in Grayslake, Illinois.  Hernandez was exceptionally drunk when he plowed into 19-year-old Heather LaMarche, causing her vehicle to roll several times and burst into flames. While two of Heather’s passengers did escape before the fire, Heather did not.  She suffered extreme burns and died at the hospital within hours.  Hernandez was also injured, appearing in court with both legs in casts.  Hernandez was driving without a license and will likely also be charged with  reckless homicide.

A Chinese restaurant owner has been sent to one year in prison by a Federal Court in Knoxville, Tennessee for conspiring to harbor, house and employ Hispanic illegal aliens.  While counsel for Pun Wan Chan stridently argued that “everyone else is doing it” and that Chan had used a Knoxville employment agency that advertised in the local Chinese newspaper to exclusively fill his employment slots (said employment agency only representing illegal aliens purportedly), the court held that what Chan did was to take advantage of illegal immigrants, who would be too afraid of discovery and deportation to report labor law violations or other mistreatment.

 Peligro, Will Robinson!!

If traffic hazards were not notoriously enough already during the Labor Day Weekend, now we will welcome the onset of Mexican semi-trucks that will begin their crossing of the Border carrying Mexican goods into the US on Saturday.  The Teamsters Union is appealing to the 9th District Court of Appeals in San Francisco for an emergency injunction to Bush’s final implementation to his father’s 1994 NAFTA Treaty.  “Before providing unconditional access throughout the country to tens of thousands of big rigs we know little to nothing about, we must insure they meet safety and environmental standards,”  No kidding!  Hmmm…  I wonder if the drivers will speak English?  Or is that just a requirement for Mexican truck drivers entering Laredo, Texas?  FRIDAY UPDATE:  The onset of this pilot program will not begin before Thursday, Sept. 6, when up to 44 Mexican trucks will begin DAILY “long hauls” into the United States. By the end of September, that numbers is expected to increase to 174. Our government worries that “further delays might jeopardize diplomatic and trade relations with Mexico.

Hasta la Vista

Two more illegal aliens working on roofing jobs near Great Falls, Montana are on their way home via deportation.  They follow five illegal alien roofers deported from Great Falls last month and another six illegal alien roofers nabbed in Glasgow three weeks ago.  Roofing companies started arriving in the area in droves following a June 16 hail storm that caused significant damage in the area.

Ten illegal aliens were apprehended in DuBois, Pennsylvania during a traffic stop Monday.  Nine of the illegal aliens were from Mexico (8 men, 1 woman all between the ages of 20 and 26), and another was a juvenile female illegal alien from Guatemala.  All will be deported by ICE.

Five illegal aliens from Mexico were discovered in a freight train car just outside of Abilene.  The two men and three women are being held by ICE to prepare for their deportation.

Missouri has nabbed it’s first illegal alien under Gov. Blunts 5-day-old mandate for state officers to check citizenship for every person arrested.  Jose Guadalupe Delacruz, illegal alien from Mexico, was arrested in Jefferson City in connection with an assault.  County police called Missouri’s Highway Patrol, who verified Delacruz was an illegal alien, as well as being wanted in Jackson County, MO to answer a warrant for driving with a revoked drivers license.  Delacruz is slated for deportation.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement criminal investigators will no longer be involved in immigration work site enforcement or conduct checks for illegal alien prisoners.  Almost 1,000 ICE Office of Investigations agents will be reassigned exclusively to customs investigations, reducing the manpower involved in detention and removal of illegal aliens to 4,000 nationwide, according to documents obtained by The Washington Times and interviews with ICE union representatives.  Great.  Just great.

Dr. Gene Rogers, Director of Health & Human Services for Sacramento County in California — and medical director since 1999 for their Indigent Services Program — has been fired.  Dr. Rogers filed suit against the county in 2003 questioning the county’s hard budget cuts while not cutting non-emergency medical care provided daily to scores of illegal aliens.  He cited “cases and case histories of patients who essentially have come up from Mexico for the express purpose of being treated here, and then leaving to return home,” Dr. Rogers said. “I’ve watched illegal immigrants brazenly demand free, non-emergency health care that was meant for our poorest citizens. I’ve heard them and their families complain. They feel entitled to it.”   The suit remains under appeal in Federal Courts.

Shoot me.  Texas Gov. Rick Perry and 150 local business leaders are in Mexico City this week chatting about economic initiatives in renewable energy and the energy sector in general between Texas and Mexico.  Gov. Perry just had to make the statement that the plan to build a fenced/virtual border wall between the U.S. and Mexico “sends a bad message” and “won’t work.”  Perry said he favors building short spans of walls in some urban areas on the border. He also said immigrants should be issued ID cards with biometric data that would allow the government to keep tabs on them.  Otherwise, “we know how to deal with border security, and you don’t do it by building a fence; you do it by putting boots on the ground,” Perry said.  Yes, Gov. Perry…but we just can’t seem to get enough boots.

The Border Patrol Chief of Laredo, Texas — one of the most dangerous illegal alien entry points in the US — made his department’s role quite clear this week:  “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,” Carlos X. Carrillo, Border Patrol chief of Laredo, Texas, told guests at a town-hall meeting Thursday. “The Border Patrol’s job is not to stop illegal immigrants. The Border Patrol’s job is not to stop narcotics. … The Border Patrol’s mission is not to stop criminals.  The Border Patrol’s mission is to stop terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the country.”  A furious Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo called for Carrillo’s immediate resignation.  As expected, Carrillo has now profusely apologized.  “It’s painfully obvious to me that I could have done a better job of articulating my talking points,” Carrillo groveled.

The AFL-CIO and the ACLU have joined forces with several immigrant rights groups in California and have filed suit against the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration in an attempt to block implementation of the coming national crackdown on employers hiring illegal aliens.  The crackdown relies upon the SSA generating letters to employers of employee identifications that do not match federal records and providing 90 days for the employers to correct same or risk severe fines.  The suit cites the SSA database as being full of errors, and therefore destined to produce erroneous reports, and that “tens of thousands of workers will lose their jobs right before the holidays.”

Two “immigrant rights” coalitions that splintered over political differences in Los Angeles last year (the “March 25 Coalition” continued their protests, while “We Are America Coalition other shifted its focus on helping illegals obtain legal citizenship and voter registration drives) have now rejoined and have renamed themselves the “We are All Elvira and Saulito Coalition“.  Instead of calling for workers to boycott their jobs (which never worked well), they are now planning a boycott of commerce on September 12, in which no Hispanics will spend money.

Notorious radical Ricardo Juarez, leader of “Mexicans Without Borders,” is a devout follower of Mexican Communist Guerrillas…the Marxist Zapatista Army of National Liberation?   His idol is Mexican revolutionary and leftist rebel Emiliano Zapata?  Where’s his ski mask and AK-47?   I’m shocked!  Say it ain’t so!

An illegal alien from Mexico apparently died from desert heat while illegally crossing our border near Tucson, Arizona.  His body was found by a local rancher on his land with no identification.  The man’s death brings the total to 156 of desert deaths of illegal aliens near Tucson since October 1, 2006.

Huh?  The LAPD is ceasing impounding vehicles for drivers stopped without driver’s licenses.  “The decision touches on what has long been a hot-button issue, because many unlicensed drivers who have their cars towed are illegal immigrants who cannot get driver’s licenses.”  So Los Angeles officers, who have been impounding some 40,000 autos annually, have stopped until they receive a ruling from the city attorney on whether a 2005 ruling from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals applies to them.  Fortunately, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol are continuing the impoundments, in belief the 9th Circuit ruling has nothing to do with them.  Do read this link and, at the bottom, a digest of the Oregon case that was the basis for the 9th Circuit Court’s review.

An estimated 25,000 to 50,000 illegal aliens in Oklahoma have fled to Arkansas or Kansas in recent weeks fearing the impact of Oklahoma’s recent law to seriously crack down on illegal immigration that will take effect on January 1, 2008.   Ironically, Arkansas is poised to pass a similar law in their state, and Kansas is giving the idea some serious thought, too.  In Arizona, where the illegal alien population is estimated at some 500,000, about 100 illegal aliens are believed to be leaving the state each day in advance of the state’s January 1 crackdown on employers.

Hundreds of public school students in Arizona are struggling to learn English from teachers who don’t know English themselves. Nine of 32 school districts reviewed failed miserably.  I doubt that is confined to Arizona.

Muy Buenos!

Nearly 70% of Arizona voters polled last week strongly approve of their state’s law to severely punish employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens, as well as the fed’s recent deployment of current law requiring employers to fire illegal aliens if their identities are found to be questionable and can’t resolve same in 90 days.

Good ole Arizona Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s much maligned hotline has nabbed another dozen illegal aliens, including two bonafide smugglers, thanks to a tip provided by an anonymous caller.

A US District Judge has upheld Arizona’s new voter identification laws requiring all voters to submit proof of US citizenship and various forms of identification before being allowed to vote in the state.  The vast majority of contentions presented by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund were rejected in the ruling, but two more remain for consideration.

Missouri’s Governor ordered Tuesday a crackdown on state-paid construction companies who hire illegal aliens.  In addition to existing requirements for contractors to provide paperwork ensuring their workers are employed legally, the state will now regularly audit said paperwork and conduct spot inspections at work sites to review workers’ own documentation.  On the day before, Gov. Blunt ordered all of his Highway Patrol, Capitol Police and Missouri Water Patrol to check the citizenship status of “everyone they present for incarceration.

Third Weekly Digest of Illegal Immigration in America

PREFACE: This is a recurring weekly compendium of acts and issues inherent to the matters surrounding illegal immigration in the United States.

During the week of August 20-26, 2007:

Malos Muchachos

Elvira Arellano, who found sanctuary in a Chicago church for more than a year to evade deportation (again) trying to wait out the process on the back of her 8-year-old American-born son, was convinced by amnesty proponents to leave the safety of the church to speak out at a Washington protest to be held on September 12.  Amnesty folks sneaked her out of the church Wednesday, August 15, and took her to Los Angeles, where she began her speaking tour before four churches there in support of amnesty, especially for mothers of anchor children.  Elvira was apprehended by ICE in L.A. and quickly deported to Tijuana.  Elvira decried being separated from her son, while voluntarily leaving her child with virtual strangers to remain in the states.  For the many of you who don’t remember or never paid attention to her rap sheet,  Elvira first entered the US illegally in 1997, but was caught at the border and immediately deported.  On her second try just a few days later, she slipped through our Mexican border unnoticed.  She found a variety of jobs and gave birth to her son.  But in 2002, she was arrested at O’Hare Airport in Chicago when authorities discovered she was using a fake social security number in her job cleaning planes at the airport.  Elvira was finally convicted of social security fraud and in an immigration hearing early last Summer, the judge ordered Elvira to prepare for deportation.  Elvira chose instead to once more snub our laws and entered the sanctuary of the Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago.  Since her deportation, amnesty rights activists have tried to rally support for her return with a series of protest marches in Los Angeles, but have so far failed to draw any significant support beyond a handful of marchers.  But don’t feel so bad for Elvira — she has become the “TALK OF TIJUANA” and is being praised, wined-and-dined and heralded as a hero for defying US authorities for taking sanctuary in that Chicago church.  Of course, Tijuana is full of illegal aliens deported from the US.

Sergio Hernandez, 20 and an illegal alien from Mexico, died from driving drunk in Wausau, Wisconsin when his car hit a deer and then three utility poles, knocking out power to nearly 5,000 residents.  Sergio had a long history of alcohol abuse, as well as using a myriad of fake identities.

Ramon Zamora-Soldano, 41 and an illegal alien, dragged two young girls (ages 5 and 6) attending a birthday party in Gastonia, North Carolina into his apartment by their hair, locked his door and proceeded to prepare to rape them.   The girls’ parents broke into the apartment where they found Soldano with his pants down and one girl struggling with her dress pulled up.

Two-year-old Kelynn Byrd died from extreme blunt chest and abdominal trauma after his mother’s boyfriend, Michael Hernandez, an illegal alien from Mexico, kicked the child to death in Coweta, Oklahoma near Tulsa.

28 illegal aliens were nabbed in connection with a raid of Smithfield Food’s slaughterhouse in Tar Heel, North Carolina.  Of those, 13 were women, 15 were men, 25 illegal aliens were from Mexico, 2 from Guatemala, and 1 from Honduras. All are believed to have committed crimes tied to identity thefts.

The notoriously violent Hispanic MD-13 gang coterie has had 128 of its members arrested by ICE in San Diego raids.  All are Mexican citizens and 68 are here illegally, MANY of those with significant criminal records.  It was the largest dragnet yet of the MD-13 gangs by ICE’s Operation Community Shield.

Customs Agents in El Paso, Texas have made the largest single seizure of Heroin in recent years — larger than the total amount seized in 2005 — when they found nearly 11 pounds stuffed into the dashboard of a car driven by illegal alien from Mexico, 37-year-old Eliverto Piedra Rincon, who was trying to smuggle the heroin over the border bridge.  Rincon was living illegally in Raleigh, North Carolina before his arrest.

Last Sunday, August 19, was a busy one for Border Patrol agents in Arizona.  They nabbed two illegal aliens 3 miles north of the border, who had left another man alone in the desert to die from convulsions (they found the man’s body, too), they stopped an RV 32 miles north of the border near Sonoita with 54 illegal aliens crammed inside, and a tipster in Nogales who claimed a child was being held for ransom led to the arrests of 72 illegal aliens crammed into two separate “stash” houses.  No word since about whether the child ransom claim has been substantiated.  By the way, the Pima County (Arizona) Medical Examiner’s office has seen 170 illegal alien deaths since January 1, 2007 — the largest number of deaths of illegal aliens who crossed their county’s border with Mexico recorded so far.

Here is a blog post from VDARE that will chill your soul and offer a ton of insight.  Rodrigo Mendoza, illegal alien from Mexico, was drunk with a blood alcohol level of .30, put his wife and three children into his pickup and, at a speed greater than 80 miles per hour, lost control and slammed down an embankment.  His 6-year-old son, Bryan was killed when he was thrown from the truck and the other two children were seriously injured, as was his wife.  Rodrigo was sentenced to six years in prison, while his wife, who stated in court, “In my culture, you do what your husband says,” (relating to her not trying to stop her extremely drunk husband from getting behind the wheel in the first place) was sentenced to a year’s probation for recklessly endangering her children.

Raul Tovar, 24, illegal alien, was arrested near Nashville, Tennessee after he was found masturbating beneath a pedestrian bridge.  He lied about his identity (of course), but was positively identified via fingerprints.  In addition to charges of indecent exposure, evading arrest, resisting arrest, and “criminal impersonation”(?), he faces deportation.

US Customs & Border Patrol agents apprehended 58 illegal aliens living in a small house in Alamo, Texas just East of McAllen.  The tally was 15 women and 43 men, of whom were 33 illegal aliens from Mexico, 19 from Brazil, 3 from Honduras, 2 from San Salvador, and 1 from Peru.

Eight illegal aliens from Central America were arrested by County Police at Panama City Beach, Florida construction sites, all of whom were using stolen social security numbers for employment.  Seven of the men were working on a job at the Bay County Courthouse.

56 illegal aliens from Mexico and other Central and South America countries were found in horrible living conditions crammed inside a Floresville, Texas mobile “stash” home with no water and little food.  Some required medical care at the scene prior to their arrests.  There were 37 men, 19 women and 11 juveniles forced to live in the squalid conditions before being smuggled further into the country.  Various authorities are still searching for the smugglers who kept them there.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Jose Rivera, an illegal alien already deported once back to Honduras, is believed to be a serial rapist authorities have searched for for nearly three years.  Rivera was convicted for car theft and deported in 2006.  While rape charges are pending, Rivera has been levied with federal charges for re-entering the US after being convicted of a felony.

Tampa police are searching for Gloria Ines Bustamante, 51, an illegal alien from Columbia, who is believed to be the ring-leader of an organized group selling Florida drivers licenses to illegal aliens for $1,200 each.  Gloria was working with Deisy Oropesa, a former customer service rep in the Hillsboro County Tax collector’s office, who was indicted on federal charges of lying in documents that said the illegal aliens provided valid passports to prove their US citizenship before issuing the licenses.  Oropesa confessed to selling fraudulent licenses and “altering the citizenship status of 58 people obtaining driver’s licenses, and being paid $200 per transaction.  (Nearly $12,000.)  Oropesa also confessed to being paid $25,000 by Bustamante and her ring of organized drivers license defrauders.

A Mexican man who has been deported from the United States twice in the last 13 years received an 80-month federal prison sentence earlier this week for unlawfully being in the country.  Ricardo Sanchez-Lopez, 47 and illegal alien from Mexico, has been a criminal his entire adult life.  While living illegally in the US, he has been convicted of 12 charges involving drunk driving and public intoxication, as well as 4 convictions on various assault charges.  He used six different fake identities until he was finally identified by fingerprints when arrested in Tennessee on an aggravated assault charge.  He won’t be doing any time for the assault, since the matter was transferred to federal court that resulted in this 80-month sentence prior to deportation (again).

Our super-duper high-tech “virtual fence” planned for the more remote areas of our US-Mexican border is in big trouble.  According to a Wall Street Journal article on Thursday, the project (a portion of which was due to be completed in June, 2007) is tremendously behind schedule, its contractor (Boeing’s Integrated Defense Systems unit) has undergone a massive project management restructuring, and cost estimates have exploded to near $30 BILLION for the entire project.  Worst of all, the fence — that relies upon flawless integration of motion sensors, special lighting, high-resolution cameras and sophisticated radar systems — doesn’t work.  According to the Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General Richard L. Skinner, “Boeing has had trouble getting the different components to work together without glitches.”  Add to this the fears in Congress for Inspector General Skinner’s comments that the Boeing contract is in the “high-risk” category for waste and abuse because of its scope, its dollar value, and “vulnerabilities stemming from the lack of acquisition management capacity.”  According to the Journal, the DHC failed to “lay the foundation to oversee and assess contractor performance and control costs and schedule of this major investment,” said Skinner during a Congressional testimony last month.  What this means, kiddos, is if Boeing can’t deliver that virtual fence, we’ll have to scrap all those plans, eat a mucho dose of billions of dollars in losses and start from scratch with a hard fence that will cost more and take much, much longer.

With more than $800 Million in the Secure Fence Act coffers, only 17.9 of the 854 miles of border fencing has been built as of August 10, 2007 and Republican Presidential Candidate and California Congressman Duncan Hunter has sent a letter to President Bush detailing just how far behind the project is that, by law, requires 392 miles of fencing from Calexico, Calif., to Douglas, Ariz., to be completed by May 30, 2008 and another 30 miles of fencing be completed in the Laredo, Texas, sector by Dec. 31, 2008.  The letter politely demands President Bush to build that fence.

If President Bush is serious about getting tough on U.S. employers who hire illegal aliens, he can start with his own administration, which employs thousands of unauthorized workers, says California Congressman Duncan Hunter, the top Republican on the House immigration subcommittee.  A 2006 audit showed federal, state and local governments are among the biggest employers of the half-million persons in the U.S. illegally using “non-work” Social Security numbers — numbers issued legally, but with specific instructions that the holders are not authorized to work in the U.S.  According to the 2006 audit by the Social Security inspector general, 17 of the 100 worst employers using employees with non-work numbers were government agencies: seven federal agencies, seven state agencies and three local governments. That means the government knows who those employees are, but usually does not go after them.

Aha!  I’ve been waiting for this one:  A week after unveiling a major crackdown on businesses that hire illegal immigrants, the Bush administration is now conceding that its most heavily touted weapon in pursuing employers — an assault against Social Security fraud — will be nearly useless.  That’s because when the Social Security Administration warns employers about bogus identification numbers, it remains barred from also alerting the Department of Homeland Security, the agency that’s supposed to hand out penalties.

Muy Estúpido

Olivia Avila became a US citizen two years ago, but for five years before that was an illegal alien working in a Kansas meatpacking plant using a stolen social security number to keep her job.  Olivia went to the Social Security Administration a couple of months ago and tried to collect back benefits for those five years when she was working with a stolen social security number. She now faces a multitude of federal charges, including aggravated identity theft.

Muy Buenos!

Arizona will begin construction on a 7-mile stretch of border fencing this weekIt will be the first new stretch of primary fencing built in the Tucson sector in more than a decade, with some 240 miles earmarked to continue.

Mexican commercial truck drivers coming into the US for NAFTA-sanctioned trade in Laredo must be able to speak English, and that requirement is stirring a heated debated among Mexican trucking companies.  The law requiring truck drivers to speak English is not new.  It’s been on the books for many years, but it just now being enforced following the recent failure of the fed’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform (Amnesty) bill.

The Patriot’s Border Alliance group held its first border ops event in Palominos, Arizona (birthplace of the Minutemen Project), in concert with several other volunteer patrol groups including the Minutemen, and netted nearly 50 new volunteers and a wealth of praise and appreciation from US Border Patrol agents.  Best news of all was the group did not see one single illegal crossing during the event, a first among volunteers monitoring our border with Mexico.  The group is planning a 30-day muster (gathering) in October in the same area and will work again alongside Border Patrol and volunteers from other organizations.  I can’t relate how much I appreciate and respect everyone who volunteers for such a mission.

Virginia’s only Hispanic state lawmaker is crafting legislation that would cut off state funding to any locality providing sanctuary to illegal aliens.

In the aftermath of the Newark, New Jersey executions of three black college-bound students, New Jersey’s Attorney General Anne Milgram set a policy Wednesday to require all local police officers to ask about the immigration status of suspects charged with serious crimes, and to notify federal immigration authorities if there is reason to believe the suspect is in the country illegally. The requirements, which go into effect immediately, apply to suspects arrested for indictable offenses and for driving while intoxicated.  Too bad New Jersey didn’t decide to do this all along, instead of providing sanctuaries for an estimated million or so illegal aliens up to now.  If they had, three families in Newark would be rejoicing in setting up college dorm rooms for their children instead of mourning their unbelievably evil-born deaths.

Part 2: The Weekly Digest of Illegal Immigration in America

This weekly entry is my attempt to see that the latter won’t happen.

During the week of August 13-19, 2007.

Malos Muchachos

A quick and grossly incomplete scan of the previous week’s bad boys includes the following criminals of interest:

“He tore an entire family apart.”  Juan Felix Salinas, 42, illegal alien from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, was drunk at three times the legal limit, speeding like a bat out of Hell and dashing in and out of lanes dodging Houston traffic last Saturday night when his van slammed into the back of a Toyota Corolla on the East Freeway.  Within seconds, the Toyota caught fire.  Despite the best efforts of several citizens, who tried to fight the fire with extinguishers while trying desperately to free the family trapped inside, Tenisha Williams, 26, her new husband S.J. Williams, and Tenisha’s two-year-old son Xavier Brown all burned to death.  Tenisha and Shermery were married on 07-07-07 and the young family was on their way home from having seen a movie.  Juan has a rap sheet of drunken and violent behavior, most recently including a March 31 domestic violence charge for which he was free on bond by Jacinto City, Texas.  Juan is on hold by ICE pending three expected charges of intoxicated manslaughter.

Meanwhile, in Virginia Beach, Virginia in a case Bill O’Reilly hammered upon, illegal alien from Mexico Alfredo Ramos, 22, has pleaded “I’m guilty, judge, of all the charges” and now faces up to 40 years in prison for the March 30 drunk driving deaths of Alison Kunhardt, 17, and Tessa Tranchant, 16.  Ramos, driving 65 in a 45, slammed into the teens’ car stopped at a city stop light.  During the seven years Ramos has been living illegally in the US, he has racked up quite a few drunk driving charges.  Sentencing is scheduled for November 5.

In Marshalltown, Iowa, about an hour northeast of Des Moines, the Feds have charged a meatpacker labor union official leading the members over at the Swift plant for not only harboring illegal aliens, but for teaching them how to falsify identities and protect them down the road.   Braulio Pereyra-Gabino, 58, a naturalized American hailing from Argentina also likes to share his life’s lessons learned while living in America as an illegal alien, along with a host of employment tactics he learned during the 1996 and recent raids of illegal aliens at the Swift plant.

Two married couples from India happen to own a couple of run-down motels in Harlingen, Texas.   Following an ICE undercover investigation, the four have pleaded guilty in Harlingen, Texas for harboring and abetting the smuggling of a short ton of illegal aliens from Mexico in their two motels.  Joining the four Bhaktas in smuggling and harboring is illegal alien Domingo Santibanez of Mexico, who admitted to sneaking the illegals across the US-Mexico border for their $400 a nite luxury stays with ten to a room.  Normally, the Bhaktas only charge $40 to stay in their A/C-deprived, no ice and unplugged coke machine rat nests.

Five construction workers were resting for a few moments, sitting on a guard rail on Route 29 near Burtonsville, Maryland and protected by their work trucks.  And along came Manuel De Jesus Gonzalez-Geronimo, 31, illegal alien from Guatemala, who hit one of the parked trucks sparking a chain reaction causing another truck to crash into the men and that killed one man instantly, killed another who died in the hospital, and seriously injured three others.  Manuel deserted his wrecked van at the scene and fled on foot, then turned himself in a tad bit later to authorities.

Texas Border Patrol agents finally caught a supremo-evil illegal alien the whole country has been searching for more than a decade when they grabbed Yong Orellana Bonilla, 33, trying to sneak past them along some railroad tracks in Sarita (tiny little town between Corpus Christi and Harlingen along the coast).  Back in 1997, Bonilla and his pal, illegal alien Salramon Gonzales, kidnapped, tortured and repeated raped two other men they tied up in their apartment in Dunn, North Carolina (near Fayetteville) and finally succeeded in killing one man by rape-led strangulation.  Bonilla and Gonzales fled, but Gonzales was finally found in 2001, was convicted of murder and kidnapping in 2002, and is now serving a 39 year sentence in a North Carolina penn.  Bonilla has been skipping all around the US with stolen identities and a myriad of aliases…until now.

The Texas family of Dani Countryman learned this week that the 15-year-old’s murderer, illegal alien Alejandro Rivera Gamboa, less than NINE MONTHS BEFORE HE MURDERED DANI had pleaded guilty to a drunk driving charge and was clearly known to be an illegal alien by the Oregon courts.  In the plea agreement, Gamboa signed the following statement:  “I understand that if I am not a citizen of the United States, a criminal conviction could cause me to be deported, denied United States citizenship, or refused the right to re-enter the United States.”  I wonder how that judge is sleeping lately, since no one bothered to call ICE at all.

VERIZON and at least one of its subcontractors are in hot water in Western Pennsylvania, after quite a few illegal aliens have been discovered working on fiber optic installations.  Plum city officials have killed 27 work permits to Verizon, suspending all fiber optic work in the area to the elated delight of the fair citizens of the borough.

A 52-year-old illegal alien from Mexico, Ruben Hernandez-Juarez, was arrested in Indiantown, Florida and charged with sexual battery on a child after molesting a 6-year-old boy.

While trying to outrun and escape police near San Isidro, California, a stolen truck full of illegal aliens collided with another vehicle killing one illegal alien, sending four more illegals to the hospital with injuries, and two more illegals scattered into the brush and escaped the scene.  It is yet unknown whether the coyote was nabbed in the mele.  Our prayers to the family of local resident Alicia Fuentes, who was killed at the scene when the truck of illegals slammed into her car.  Alicia was driving her sister to the Post Office at the time.  Residents in the area say human smuggling is commonplace in their area.

One of three National Guardsman stationed along the Texas-Mexico border accused of corruption has pleaded guilty in a Laredo federal court for transporting and conspiracy to transport more than 100 illegal aliens into the US.  Jose Rodrigo Torres, 24, admitted to hiding illegals inside government vehicles and bypassing border checkpoints, all while in uniform and on duty.  Also arrested were Guard Sgt. Julio Cesar Pacheco and Sgt. Clarence Hodge, Jr., along with Pacheco’s sister and brother-in-law.  All four of these pleaded not guilty at their arraignments earlier this year.

Sleep Vail County in Colorado is experiencing a “drastic increase” in violent crimes, thanks to illegal aliens there.

An illegal alien, who has already been deported TWICE, has been arrested for fondling an 8-year-old girl in Huron, Pennsylvania.   Lucio Sanchez-Martinez, 32, just walked right into the girl’s apartment, laid down on her bed where she was sleeping, and began rubbing her thigh.  According to the police report, the girl notified her father of what had just happened, when the perp left.  “The father found Sanchez-Martinez and said Sanchez-Martinez threw a punch at him, according to the police report. The father told police he ducked the punch, then punched Sanchez-Martinez in the face and threw him down a flight of stairs. Sanchez-Martinez suffered slight injuries, but the father was not charged in the incident.”  Sanchez-Martinez will also face charges for illegally entering the residence.

Three illegal aliens are in custody in Brewster, New York on various sexual offense charges.  Sergio Antonio Martinez-Garza, 32 from Guatemala, has been accused of sexually fondling and abusing two girls, ages 10 and 11.  Meanwhile, Pedro Sagastume, 21, and Jeremiaz Perez, 22, have been accused of the statutory rape two girls, ages 13 and 15, in the men’s apartment.

Hmmm…  Is Worcester, Massachusetts planning on becoming the latest “Sanctuary City” in the United States to harbor and protect illegal aliens???

The US Census Bureau is asking federal authorities to suspend any and all “raids” and investigations of illegal aliens and their activities nationwide prior to their conducting the 2010 census of our population.  The federal government “informally” did so, by the way, before, during and immediately after population counts were taken in 2000.

A huge fire is building down in New Orleans, where a class-action suit has been filed by several subcontractors working on post-Katrina rebuilding efforts citing flagrant abuses by other subcontractors using illegal alien workers, paying them illegally low wages and thereby causing hundreds of legal workers to be out-bid for jobs by out-of-town, “fly-by-night” contractors skirting labor laws.  “They’re paying cash money with no matching Social Security, no benefits, no taxes, no workmen’s comp,” said the head of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.  Nearly 40% of LEGAL painters, electricians, plumbers, and construction laborers are out of work.  “The biggest lie in town is that we have no workers,” said Barry Kaufman, business manager for the Laborers’ International Union of North America’s Uptown New Orleans chapter.

No!  Say it ain’t so! Is there massive corruption in the Department of US Citizenship and Immigration Services???  In a confidential report from 2006 obtained by the Washington Times’ Sara Carter, USCIS agents have allegedly aided Islamic extremists in ID fraud, while some others are accused of committing crimes for personal gain…like the agent in Harlingen, TX who sold immigration documents for $10,000 each to 20 illegal aliens.

Did you know the new Bush plan to enforce the immigration laws already on the books also extends to illegal alien prostitutes as a recognized employment group?  Chertoff gives them 90 days to “resolve any discrepancies between social security numbers they provide to undercover police and the official records of the Social Security Administration.”   About two dozen protesters turn out in West Chester, Pennsylvania over the last weekend to decry the attack against illegal alien prostitutes.  Money quote came from “a criminal justice professor named Juan” who explained, “It’s almost impossible to find a white chick who will do a Dirty Sanchez. Let’s face it, illegal-immigrant prostitutes can’t be choosers. They’ll do the dirty jobs that other prostitutes won’t do, and they’ll do them for less money.”  Trust me, this article linked above is a MUST READ.  I haven’t laughed so hard in quite a while!!!

Even as President Bush is withdrawing half of the National Guard Troops right now that he sent to the US-Mexico border in 2006 to help build fences, the Border Patrol is now desperately seeking volunteers to help them meet the President’s goal of finishing 70 miles of fencing by fiscal year end of September 30.  The Border Patrol sector chiefs said their fence-building efforts are going to fall short.  Just one more little dittie that reinforces why so many (like me) believe Bush was never, ever serious about building that fence, hum?

I’m admittedly torn as to where to log this one:  Crazy Politicians or the Very Stupid.  Florida’s  21st Congressional District should be looking for a replacement for their REPUBLICAN Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart.  Hot Air is hosting a video of Balart’s speech before last month’s national convention of La Raza that chaps my royal laurels, as Rep. Balart panders to the Latino crowd.  Skip ahead to the five minute mark:  “I just want to leave you with one thought:  For the Hispanic community in the United States, and not only for the interests of our children and their children, for the interests of our entire Hispanic community…and also for the National interest and the national success of the great United States of America, it is important that we emphasize the Spanish language and that we keep the Spanish language and that we transmit than emphasis to our children and to our grandchildren.”  (Then he warbles a repeat of the same statement in Spanish.)  Doesn’t this wacko realize that the Democrats claim to have all dibs on Hispanic voters these days and in those to come…?

The Great State of Utah is requesting the Federal Government refund them up to $85 Million dollars per year for their costs of educating illegal alien children.  A recent state audit of Utah’s elementary, secondary and high school populations revealed between 10,714 and 16,667 illegal alien students were provided a free education during the 2006-2007 school year.

Adopting McCain’s bite-back tactic of suggesting Romney’s Immigration Plan is to “get out his small-varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his yard,” Blithering Dunderhead Mitt Romney skewered Mega-Idiot Rudy Giuliani for creating the nation’s greatest sanctuary city for illegal aliens.  Rudy, ever the panderer, offers a press release citing example after example of how he has complained to the Federal Government during the last 25 years.  So, since McCain is thankfully out of the picture, who do you think will do a better job of keeping his word if elected President: Mitt or Rudy?  I vote Fred.  😉

Later in the week, Rudy was caught with his pants down around his pandering ankles.  On April 14, Rudy presents this quote, “We can end illegal immigration.  I promise you, we can end illegal immigration.”  (Applause)  Hillary’s pals dug up a Mayor Rudy speech before Harvard nearly eleven years ago:  “We’re never, ever going to be able to totally control immigration into a country that is as large as ours that has borders as diverse as the borders of the United States….We just have to accept that if we want to be the kind of country that we are.”  Yep, HotAir has the video for you to watch and hear for yourself.

In New Haven, Connecticut, two Latino immigration rights groups have filed suit against the Department of Homeland Security for the raids there earlier this summer than netted 30 illegal aliens.  Hilariously, their primary claim is that the raids were performed in retaliation for the city’s new ID card program open to all residents, legal or illegal.  At least, they’re not claiming false imprisonment or that ICE failed to do its job.

A hornet’s nest has been stirred up in Spring Valley, New York after the city’s mayor hired a raft of illegal aliens from a day laborer hangout to work on a city public works project in July.  Further, the mayor, George Darden, has hired illegal aliens to work for him personally, including one used recently to haul away some furniture.  A 76-year-old resident, Odell Cureton, is spearheading a petition demanding state and federal  investigations into the village’s illegal alien hiring practices, since local ones apparently have chosen to look the other way.  Now the village officials are considering implementing new policies to “comply with federal and state immigration and labor laws.”

Henceforward, any companies wishing to do business with the government of Anne Arundel County in Maryland must sign an affidavit swearing they do not hire illegal aliens.  “Any company that is complying with federal law and not hiring illegal immigrants will have nothing to be concerned about,” said County Executive John Leopold, who issued the executive order this week.  Unfortunately, federal law prohibits the county from investigating whether an employer hires illegals or not, and this order will rely upon ICE bringing any violations to their attention.

A Louisville, Tennessee apartment management company has notified its residents that they will evict anyone in their Lakeview Apartments who are illegal aliens.  Expect intervention on this one, since the management company only offered residents two weeks’ notice, instead of the federally-mandated 30 days for an eviction and furthermore must be due to nonpayment, destruction or illegal activity.  The company cited its concerns over violation of occupancy fire codes, since they have no idea who and how many people are living in the apartments, and also fear being accused of harboring illegal aliens down the road.

In the northeast suburb of Chicago called Carpentersville Village, local Latinos are protesting a town council move to require all vehicles stopped by police with unlicensed drivers and/or carrying no auto liability insurance be towed and impounded. The village is about 40% Hispanic and local wackos decry the impoundment measure as an “anti-immigrant” movement designed to oppress their community.  City officials see the measure as a means of cracking down on recent escalation of their already high rates of drunk driving and drivers without licenses and insurance.  The village has tabled discussion on a proposed ordinance that would punish businesses who hire illegal aliens and the landlords who rent to them until the US Supreme Court concludes its review of the Hazelton, PA ordinance under attack by the ACLU.

Remember Elvira Arellano, one of our more prominent poster children for illegal alien sanctuaries?  She celebrated one year on August 15 for evading deportation behind the sanctuary veil of Chicago’s Aldalbertos United Methodist Church, where she has been living with her 8-year-old anchor son and never venturing outside.  Now Elvira has decided to make her way to Washington to assist in congressional lobbying efforts for immigration reform slated for September 12.  As stated, she likely will not fly…

 Muy Buenos!

The Hispanic anti-illegal alien group You Don’t Speak for Me” is headed to Newark, New Jersey for a rally this Sunday and they plan to talk about crimes committed by illegal aliens in the US, not the least of which was the massacre there of three college-bound young people.  Among their statistics collected are that 12 US citizens are MURDERED DAILY by illegal aliens and another 13 are KILLED ACCIDENTALLY EACH DAY by illegal alien drunk drivers and in other accidents spawned by illegal aliens.  See the group’s website here.

The First Weekly Digest of Illegal Immigration in America

(Please note:  This post was originally published on August 13, but was overwritten when I posted my new week’s offering.  I apologize if some of the links no longer are functional, although all seem to work just fine to me…)

Beginning today and continuing weekly (such is the goal), I will be logging various crimes committed by our illustrious 12-20 million illegal aliens in the United States, as well as actions taken by local communities and our government to address the immigration issues before our nation.  If anything catches my interest on a broad scale, you’ll find it here in brief (or brief for me, at least).

Malos Muchachos

A quick and incomplete scan of the previous week’s bad boys includes the following criminals of interest:

Let us begin with those four young people in Newark, NJ, all bright young people headed for Delaware State University, who became victims of a random execution-style attack in which three were murdered and one was critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head.  All they were doing at the time was pulling into a school parking lot to play music and “hang out” together.  A 15-year-old gang thug was quickly arrested and a search launched for one of his accomplices.  Thirty-one-year-old Jose Carranza, an illegal alien from Peru with two pending trials (one for aggravated assault in a local bar last year and another for the rape of a girl no older than 9) was identified by the only survivor of the schoolyard murders.  Since turning himself in to authorities, Carranza has been joined by another 15-year-old gang thug under arrest, with at least two more to come.  Police now believe Mr. Carranza was the pack leader of this highly violent gang of Hispanic teenagers and the four students stopped on “their turf,” with the four lined up against the wall for execution in retaliation.  Very little info is available out there for a 24-year-old illegal alien from Nicaragua also sought in this executionJustine Levine, guest blogging for Paterico has an interesting report about Rodolfo Godinez (a/k/a Rodolfo Gomez).

In South Carolina, mother of 16-year-old Ben Leonard and 22-year-old Megan Hughes, who were killed with their friend Jennifer Carter, 18, in a head-on collision by habitual drunk driver Pastor Rios Sanchez, illegal alien from Mexico, vows to fight the unbelievable joke of a plea deal being offered him by local prosecutors.  The Sanchez case has become one of the most prominent stories of drunk driving deaths caused by illegal aliens in the US.

Kaufman, Texas continues to mourn the attempted rape and strangulation death of 15-year-old Dani Countryman, who was killed during a “going away party” the night before she was to return home from a month-long visit with her older sister in Portland, Oregon.  The two men arrested for her death, one of whom tried to rape Dani during the party while the other one strangled her with his boot, were Alejandro Rivera Gamboa, 24, and his cousin Gilberto Arellano Gamboa, 23.  Both are illegal aliens from Mexico.  Alejandro has been arrested on four DUI charges since 2000…but always released from jail due to illegal alien overcrowding.  The apartment complex where Dani was murdered is a well-known hangout for thugs who enjoy smoking their cigs and scratching their tattoos.  The latter articles raises a large number of questions surrounding this tragedy, notably the tragedy of Dani’s life leading up to her death.

An Hispanic illegal alien was convicted in Federal Court last week for running a brothel and prostitution ring in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota suburbs.  He was preying upon illegal alien girls and women to provide his (ahem) services over the course of a year and a half.

A 75-year-old illegal alien from Peru stole purses from two women in Stamford, Connecticut, then contacted them a week later and offered to sell their stuff back to them for $300 each.  Manuel Arbulu Gonzalez has a rap sheet going back to 1967, when he was busted in Miami on narcotics charges.  He has stayed happy as a Florida clam in the US for more than 40 years…

Marvin Hernandez, 27, an illegal alien long sought by ICE for deportation to Mexico, grabbed a 14-year-old Portsmouth, NH girl floating on an innertube at a local public wave pool and groped her TWICE, forcing his hand through her bikini bottoms.  He now faces sexual assault charges.

Jose Gonzalez, the 32-year-old owner of Tarrasco Steel in Jackson, MS, has been arrested following a massive ICE investigation for hiring a multitude of illegal aliens from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, moreover falsifying Federal I-9 forms verifying their employability and using stolen or fraudulent social security numbers for their verification.  Tarrasco has provided steel rebar and installations on a myriad of bridges constructed all across the Gulf Coast area.  An ICE raid of bridges under construction back in late March netted nearly 100 illegal aliens from several different construction firms.

Hilario Soto-Hernandez escaped punishment and was deported to Mexico in 2003 after repeatedly molesting his girlfriend’s 7-year-old daughter for more than six months. But he again swam the Rio Grande and returned to Fort Worth, Texas…a tipster alerted the local Crime Stoppers program and ICE of his reappearance last week.  He now faces up to 20 years in jail for sneaking back over our border.

Jose C. Rivera, an illegal alien from Mexico, has a rap sheet truly a mile long, all accumulated since 2000.  Rivera was awaiting deportation in Atlanta, when North Carolina authorities tracked him down following his brutal rapes of three Charlotte women.  Money quote from the lead paragraph of this editorial on Friday, August 10:  “If you’re furious to learn that a convicted felon and illegal immigrant was deported and walked back into the United States — only to be accused of committing multiple rapes in Charlotte — you should be. Just be sure to direct your anger at the right source.”

Loco Politicos

Last week, Americans were thrilled to hear President Bush and Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff vow to begin enforcing the many illegal immigration, employment and social security fraud laws long on the books they should have been enforcing all along, despite the administration’s warning that doing so is likely to present huge problems for our nation’s economy.  I’m glad to see the efforts, while others believe our President is merely calling “America’s bluff” by stepping up enforcement of illegal immigration and hiring of same.  Is our President deliberately trying to ”so thoroughly scare the public with the consequences that there will be a popular groundswell for amnesty ?  Is our President really thinking, “be careful what you wish for?”  Hiring illegal workers has been illegal for more than 20 years, but employers were never held liable when social security numbers were stolen or were even returned on the SSA’s “no-match” lists.  Somewhere near two-thirds of the 12-20 million illegal alien workers in the US are “on the books” employees, using either stolen or mis-matched identities.  California Senator Diane Feinstein predicts a “catastrophe” in her state’s $32 Billion agricultural industry.  Other states with the heaviest reliance upon migrant/low-skill agricultural workers include Texas, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Illinois.  The regional impact of the new employment verification and sanction enforcements to go into effect within 30 days is expected to be substantial, perhaps seen as soon as within six months, and trickle into other low-wage industries, including household help, food packing and manufacturing, construction, hotel and food services where scrutiny is likely to be focused.  Regardless of whether one believes this new push on old laws is another Bush attempt at forcing amnesty when we all through up our hands at the financial hardship enforcing illegal immigration and hirings imposes, I feel this is a GOOD first step and one long in coming.  Now, about that border fence…

Hmmm…  A Missouri Republican House member has pleaded guilty to two counts of federal immigration fraud.  Nathan Cooper, who made his pre-political fortune as an immigration attorney, founded dummy corporations, used those companies to secure fraudulent VISAS to be used by other dummy companies in hiring illegals, deceived ICE about the immigration status of his clients’ workers and a few other tricks designed to provide needed workers to a large number of clients, including two large trucking companies in search of “qualified” drivers.  “Cooper developed a scheme to convince the government to issue improper visas and otherwise to impede the lawful operation of the H2B visa program in a number of ways,” a news release issued by the federal prosecutor’s office in St. Louis said. (H/T:  Dan Stein Report.)

Hold onto your hat:  a Japanese firm will begin offering a free download of a new video game next month that will allow players to “step into the shoes of foreigners who run afoul of the U.S. immigration system.”  Only in America, folks.

Postlude to Failed Immigration Reform

While the notably flawed Senate Bill 1639 died on the floor yesterday morning,  the priorities that Washington should continue to embrace remain:  Building the promised border, fixing the VISA nightmare and providing immigration reform that is cheaper and easier for immigrants and taxpayers to achieve.

Let us also not mistake that our job has ended with this bill’s death either.  In fact, it has just begun…assuming, of course, American citizens still wish to have that border built at all and still wish to find realistic ways of ending illegal immigration and helping those who are here find a way to stay here legally.

Here is a post from RedState that should be required reading in my opinion.  In the aftermath, “Who Spiked My Immigration Kool-Aid !?!?”  It is a highly compelling article.

I absolutely believe the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate firmly believed the President’s final attempt to create the first reform of immigration in 20 years was doomed to fail.  That is why we heard Sen. Harry Reid claim time after time, “This is not a Democrat bill — this is the President’s bill.”  That is why Speaker Nancy Pelosi early-on proclaimed she would not allow an immigration bill passed by the Senate to enter the House unless she could be assured of 70% of House Republicans vowing to support it.

Not to discount the importance of defeating a world of bad in this bill and the illicit manner in which it was secretly written, hidden from review and rammed down everyone’s throats, there was at all times a grander plan afloat.  By distancing themselves from its creation AND defeat, Democrats can easily place the blame for everyone’s problems in the laps of the GOP.  “They” wrote it.  “They” killed it.  “They” trounced amnesty.  “They” tried to strangle our agriculture industry.  “They” are racists and xenophobes.  “They” [fill in your own], ad infinitum.

Get ready for it.  And every time you hear it, understand the liberals are sucking in more and more amnesty advocate voters desperately searching for another free exodus from “the shadows”…just in time for the Presidential elections in 2008.

Alas, Democratic Senator Bob Menendez claims to speak for “those people” who were denied amnesty yesterday and vows, “To those [meaning senators] who have referred to ‘those people’ in this debate, let me say on behalf of ‘those people’, that we have seen the light and we simply will not be thrust back into the darkness.”  Thank you, HotAir, for posting his sermonic bloviation.

The 1,000 members of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials will convene next Saturday, July 7, in Miami to discuss this very topic, among others. All Democratic presidential contenders will be there with bells on. All but one Republican candidate (presumably McCain) have declined to attend. LaRaza holds its meeting in mid-July in Miami, with all Dems and No GOPs to attend. LULAC invited ONLY John McCain to their meeting in Chicago in July. He has yet to accept or decline, and LULAC is involved in “negotiations” with Democrat candidates.

By taking this calculated back seat and the GOP turning its head, the liberals of our country have all but guaranteed themselves stronger support than ever from Hispanics — our largest national minority — for the elections ahead.   And once a liberal takes hold of our helm, to perfectly compliment their control of Congress, you can bank your former livelihood on the fact that amnesty WILL come, the borders WILL remain open and every single thing conservatives found in disfavor with this dead bill will come to pass…like paying the $2.6 Trillion bar tab to fund amnesty and its immediate entitlements to welfare, healthcare and retirements.

Now that the bill is defeated, I hope grassroots America will NOT crawl back into its dark hole of anonymity, but continue to stand up and yell for promises to be kept and reform improvements be made.  And if the momentum we achieved yesterday simply fizzles out to a return of apathy, we will certainly deserve the liberal takeover of our country ahead.

Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit has four crystal clear and sage points of advice for our congress that I personally will be including in my CONTINUING emails to senators and representatives.  I encourage you to do the same.  I just wish I possessed the clarity of thought that comes so easily from Mr. Reynolds…

(1) Make the process open, transparent, and timely, with hearings, drafts on the Internet, and no last-minute bills that no one has read;

(2) Earn people’s trust, don’t demand it, and treat enforcement like it matters;

(3) Respect people who follow the law, and make legal immigration easier, cheaper, and simpler, rather than the Kafkaesque nightmare it is now;

(4) Don’t feel you have to be “comprehensive” — address the problems you can deal with first. The trust needed to deal with other problems will come later, after you’ve shown some success and some good faith.

Personally, I’ll fight until I’m no longer on this Earth.  You had better, too.

¿Cómo se Dice, "Grand Flop" ? ? ?

Strike up one huge success for American citizens and their ability to rise up en masse against acts of amazing government stupidity.   This has been a grassroots accomplishment to remember long into the future.

This entire bloated package that was Senate Bill 1639, and all the Kennedyesque bloviations surrounding it since it’s back-room birth, have finally come to an end with the bill’s death by a generous 14 votes at 46-53. (Cloture needed 60 votes to succeed.)

Indeed, “something wicked this way” came.

Throughout the past week, I have wondered long and hard what incentives, what promises were offered in the Senate’s cloakroom that would persuade so many senators to abdicate their constituencies and support this bill about which they knew nothing?  Why would they deny the exceptionally vocal will of American citizens against this immigration albatross that had no chance of ever becoming law?  We will never know.  But some senators clearly resented having their promised amendments killed and helped us end this miserable fiasco.

So much rhetoric has gotten under my skin on this matter.  I was disgusted by so many repeated condescending claims by senators like Teddy Kennedy, John McCain, Diane Feinstein, Lindsey Graham, Arlen Specter and Jon Kyl that American citizens don’t understand this bill, don’t understand what it will do, don’t understand how vital this bill is to our national security.

Actually we did.  We clearly understood how much more a threat to our national security this bill delivered, how much a $2.6 Trillion rake from our pocketbooks would hurt as we would be forced to pay for and support such an overwhelming amnesty, how immoral it was through this bill to exonerate employers for hiring illegal aliens, forgive their flagrant tax frauds over the last two decades, and remove prosecution and fines from their futures, and how this bill would destroy all immigration enforcement and ensnarl our courts for decades

Those are merely some of the reasons why American citizens threw such a frenetic fit.  Another was the sense of betrayal shared by our citizenry, their unprecedented cynicism and complete loss of confidence in Congress.  Adding gas to the fire was the manner in which this bill was being rammed through and manipulated on the Senate floor.

This bill reeked of politics as usual in Washington, another spawn of the bureaucratic morass we put in power to act on our behalf, but never does.  Pounds upon pounds of pages promising  an empty moon and guaranteeing a free ride to 12-20 million criminals that Democrats had hoped to snare in their voter ranks.

The bill was so large and comprehensive, but relied upon our government’s ability to administer fifty times more than it is already incapable of doing.  It was based upon an issue of such huge importance to our nation, but was created amidst unprecedented secrecy.  The bill was deliberately prevented from being reviewed in committee and Senators were never given an opportunity to read it or its amendments to learn all that they held.  It was shoved through the voting process with such determined expedience in absolute defiance of anything any of us learned in civics.  It angered nearly 80% of the American citizenry on all conceivable sides of the issue.  In the last hour before the bill died, the Capital Hill switchboard literally crashed from sheer volume of calls coming in.  “Not since the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, several Senate aides said, have the lines been so jammed by a single issue.”

This bill was a Grand Embarrassment.

Sen. Jeff Sessions summed my personal disgust with some of his colleagues perfectly yesterday at the close of the day.

“Let’s acknowledge that independent experts say this bill will not work, not just some radio talk show host.  Independent EXPERTS say this won’t work.  And I would just observe that radio talk show hosts know more about the bill than most Senators, if you want to know the truth.”

When the burial dust settles on this “Grand Compromise” version of immigration reform, it will become one of the final coffin nails for President Bush, who has staked the latter days of his administration on pure folly that could not possibly have worked.  In the process, he burned what residual support he had left among fellow Republicans.  This Grand Flop will also signal the end of the presidential candidacies of Sam Brownback and John McCain, that latter being noticeably absent in all of these proceedings.

I imagine Sen. Harry Reid was in a rather foul mood when he returned home last night having been stymied on a procedural shutdown in bitter irony.  Perhaps he was dosed some poetic justice for writing a brand new page in the history of our US Senate by invoking the “clay pigeon” procedure to begin with, an archaic and never used tactic that allowed Reid to personally handpick the 27 amendments to this bill and deny any other amendments be offered.  It is a power limited only to his position as Senate Majority Leader and one that no such person before him has ever attempted, because no one before Reid wanted to stifle our democratic process upon which our country has stood proud.

Our nation desperately needs to do something to curb the flagrant illegal immigration that has been drowning us all over the last two decades and yes, offer a path to citizenship, but not amnesty that slaps the face of the millions of people who have come here legally and followed the rules.  If we’ve learned anything at all since Reagan’s 1986 amnesty, it is that amnesty is not the solution. That legislation only opened the door and invited millions more who hoped to holdout for the same good fortune.

Reid’s clay-pigeon strategy was to kill every single amendment that would have removed amnesty and put any teeth whatsoever into this albatross, such as the Hutchison touch-back amendment and one offered by Webb to offer citizenship only to those illegals who have been here for four years or more.  So question no longer how much so many senators were willing to risk of our sovereignty and safety to gain a wealth of Hispanic voters into their coffers.

So now what?  I am very much a supporter of comprehensive immigration reform and am in good company.  Our nation’s leaders cannot abdicate their responsibility simply because this bill has failed.  They still have their work to do.   Ed Morrissey has some good suggestions at his Captain’s Quarter’s blog and I cannot underscore how much I agree with this bit of advice he offers Congress:

“The problems of immigration did not disappear with the failure of the cloture vote a few moments ago. Congress needs to act to resolve them — but they need to do so in a manner that respects the processes of representative democracy, and in a manner that builds the confidence of Americans rather than fuel their cynicism.”

Washington has been begging for this backlash for years.  I am proud to have taken part in the day when America finally had its fill of chronic empty promises made during campaigns and, more dastardly, the refusal of those whom we elected as our President to respect and enforce the laws of our land.

The moral of this story is one of power-mongering, worthless talk, greed and absolute arrogance in our government placed soundly in check by a usually silent Middle America.  They rose in screaming defiance to remind all that our government is “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”  And by “people,” we mean legal citizens — all others should have no rights whatsoever.

The uprising was never about immigration.  It was about the American Dream that American citizens still believe in and try to achieve, and which amnesty for 12-20 million illegal immigration cheaters would have completely destroyed.  It was about two decades of Washington betrayal and citizens rallying to end an attempt to bring this nation to its demise by many of its very own leaders.

It was always about the unfunded border.  Now go get off of your governmental arses, get your priorities in order, fund the program and build the fence like you promised.  THEN and only then will we all be happy to discuss creating a pathway to citizenship, and one without amnesty.

PS:  Brace yourselves for the next fight:  The Democrats are going to fight tooth and nail to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, since no liberal talk radio program can seem to stay in business and especially after witnessing conservative talk radio’s indefatigable contributions to this bill’s defeat.
